it’s a date
resurrecting the cocktail party- i’ll drink to thatMy youngest lands in Dayton before flying back to college. Thought it would be fun to invite a few of our new friends over for a drink so they can meet her.
Just because a gathering is small doesn’t mean it’s insignificant. Make a special splash for a petite fete. It will turn your little celebration into a memorable event.
Paperless Post is a distinctive way to put emphasis on the most casual of events. A step-up from the typical e-vite and more relaxed then a printed one. The site has adorable “invitations” that virtually pop out of addressed “envelopes”.
Individual hors d'oeuvres are another little way to make a big impact. For tonight’s menu we decided to make three.
One of my daughter’s favorites is dates wrapped in bacon. The girls had a field day with the alliteration of Dates in Dayton. This oldie but goodie never fails. An added bonus is that because they do not need to be hot (and should not unless you want to scorch your guests’ mouths). Pop them in the oven 15 minutes prior to arrival time. They will be out of the oven and on their platter before the first ring of your bell.
Croute au Fromage is in truth a fancy word for another old-timer spruced up with fresh herbs and Naan bread. Essentially a fresh take on onion/mayo/cheese dip.
Spread on Naan middle eastern bread and cut into bite size triangles.
The last is a teeny showstopper but essentially just another deconstructed dip. Simply combine chopped sweet peppadew peppers, creamy goat cheese with a splash of peppadew juice. The “dip” and the crackers below can be made earlier in the day and assembled before the guests arrive.
The secret here is the homemade wonton cracker. Wonton wrappers cut into quarters, brushed with butter and carefully baked (they burn in a flash).
Top with a dollop of the pepper/goat cheese mixture and a sprinkle of slivered peppadew.
