three’s the charm

entertaining with style- making it work for you

There’s something esthetically pleasing about three’s. This is especially true in flower arranging. Truth be told I’m a bit of a fumbler when it comes to floral design. (Please don’t tell my Garden Club of America ladies!) But what I lack in innate talent I make up with a keen power of observation and the shameless ability to repeat when I happen to strike success. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that some of the simplest arrangements look spectacular when presented in three’s.

Note that when creating a centerpiece for your table your arrangement should always be low so not to obstruct your guests’ view of one another. Your flowers should enhance, not impede, conversation.

Consider creating a trio of spring bulbs using small cube vases. These can easily be purchased at Target or any craft store for mere dollars.

As far as floral material goes (a fancy word for flowers) shop at your grocery store or if you’re lucky enough to have one nearby Trader’s Joe’s. Look for bright seasonal blooms. Hyacinths are a perfect spring selection.

Choose either three bunches of the same color or opt for two of one color and one of another. Blue and white look lovely, as do three chartreuse. One bunch should fit each cube perfectly. If you’re not sure pick up an extra bunch to use as filler.

Once you get the flowers home immediately remove the cellophane wrapping. Cut the ends of the stems and place in a container of cool water. This is called conditioning. All cut flowers need air and water to survive. Re-cutting the stems allows the water to travel up the stem to the blooms. This step will ensure your arrangement will last for several days.

Fill each vase halfway with clean cool water. If your flowers came with a packet of flower food sprinkle some into each vase. This kills bacteria and helps keep your water clear.

Cut the stems so that the blooms appear just above the rim of the vase.

The arrangement should be tight enough so the flowers stand straight at attention. This trio will look dismal if your flowers are too tall and flop about.

Space the vases evenly down the center of your table. Revel in the magic of this trio.
