Ingredients:

1 large egg

1 cup milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon flour

¼ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon cinnamon

8 slices day old European-style bread, ¾ inch thick

1-2 tablespoons unsalted butter for frying

Directions:

Beat the egg lightly in a shallow pan or pie plate. Whisk in the milk and vanilla, then the sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon. Whisk until smooth.

Heat a 10” or 12” skillet over medium heat for five minutes.

Soak the bread for 30 seconds per side. Lift and let the excess drip off and place on a rimmed plate. Continue with the other pieces of bred.

Swirl one tablespoon butter in the hot skillet. Transfer the prepared bread to the skillet in a single layer. Cook until golden brown, about two minutes. Flip and continue cooking for one more minute or until golden. Continue adding one tablespoon of butter for each new batch.

Serve immediately.
