Remember that old camp song- “make new friends but ke-ee-ep the old, one is silver and the other’s gold”?

One of the perks of moving to a new town is that it forces you to make new friends. Thankfully I’ve found some real gems. An added bonus is that one of my favs loves champagne. My cute husband doesn’t care for it- which has left things occasionally well.. flat.

Tonight my new dear friend is running over to my empty nest (away from her full one) to have a glass or two of that golden nectar. In the spirit of old for new I dug out a 2001 Egly-Ouriet Brut (I have a modern back up in the frig just in case in this oldie but goodie has turned.)

Here’s to new friends that have a definite silver lining. And here are some snacks because toasting on an empty stomach is simply gauche in any town.

A sweet and savory tidbit is the perfect accompaniment to bubbly. The 1950’s dates wrapped in bacon certainly fits that bill.

Another sweet and salty is fig jam on cranberry hazelnut crackers with a little whipped cream cheese.

And in the spirit of overdoing it (it’s difficult not to try too hard when you’re the new girl) a little caprese toast.
