a super bowl

perfecting the "done before they arrive" party- a work in progress

Dayton Daily News asked if I would be an entertaining expert on a column about throwing the best Super Bowl Party. I had to laugh- me providing insight to the mother of all football gatherings. In all my years of entertaining I don’t think I’ve ever had a Super Bowl party. I don’t even really watch that much TV let alone have a man-cave setup with a large screen TV. But a party is a party and the same tricks of the trade to make one super apply to all.

Now is the time to think like a coach. Successful entertaining is all about logistics. It’s important to make a list and map out every last detail.

The Super Bowl is all about the game. Which means your guests all need to be able to watch it comfortably. How much room you have with unobstructed views will determine how many people you can over. Once you have your guest list together considering sending out a fun e-vite. Paperless Post the perfect source to kick off your celebration.

Next plan and do as much as you can way ahead of time. This means stocking the bar. Heading over to the party store for some football themed decorations. Picking up tubs for the beer and soft drinks. Getting all your paper products- remember to choose heavy duty plates and bowls if you decide to go the disposable route.

Save the fancy appetizers for your Oscar party. Now’s the perfect time for chips and dip- hummus and guacamole offer a healthier option. For some hot apps Trader Joe’s freezer section has a fabulous array. Or consider picking up wings from a local restaurant or grocery store (make sure to call a couple days ahead to place your order).

Ordering in pizza is one option (again make sure to order ahead) or set up a chili bar where guests can serve themselves. Here is my tried and true touchdown pass chili recipe.

chili

Sauté the ground beef until brown in a large pot over medium heat.

chili

Remove the meat from the pot and drain.

chili

In the same pot sauté the chopped onion, red pepper, carrot and garlic until softened, about 5-10 minutes.

chili

Return the meat to the pot. Stir in the chili powder and cumin.

chili

Add the beef broth, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and kidney beans.

chili

Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer.

chili

Stir occasionally until reduced by one quarter. Season with salt and pepper.

chili

I serve my chili over steamed rice. I highly recommend investing in a rice cooker. It makes perfect rice every time and keeps it warm and fluffy for hours.

chili

Offer the following toppers- chopped onion and cilantro, grated cheese and sour cream.

So whether you’re rooting for the Seahawks or the Broncos if you plan and prep ahead your party is sure to be a winner.
